Kommetjie pools get sand blown in off Long Beach, salt in the air and a wind that rarely lets up. We resurface, reline and repair pools in the village, and we pay just as much attention to the pump and filter that take the brunt of it.
Kommetjie sits between Slangkop and the Atlantic, with the long white beach running north towards Noordhoek. It started as a small holiday village of beach cottages and has grown into a mix of older homes, newer family houses and places that are let out over the holidays.
Living this close to the open ocean is the draw, and it is also what wears a pool out. Wind drops fine sand into the water every day. The sand settles on the floor, gets pulled into the skimmer and grinds through the filter. Salt air gets into pump motors, electrics and anything made of metal.
The surface suffers as well. Marbelite that is constantly brushed clean of sand goes rough sooner, and stains build up where sand and debris collect in the corners.

Sand and wind change the sums a little. A smooth, hard surface is easier to keep clear of sand and stains, and that matters if the pool is cleaned less often than it should be. We explain how each finish behaves in coastal conditions before you decide.

When the old finish has gone rough, pitted and hard to clean, a new layer of marbelite is the traditional fix for a concrete pool. We remove loose plaster, repair cracks and any sand scoured spots, then apply a fresh coat in the colour you choose.
Fibreglass gives a hard, glossy surface that sand slides across instead of settling into. It seals an old porous shell, cuts down on algae and is a sensible choice for a holiday home where the pool may go a while between cleans.

On the coast, the plumbing and equipment fail as often as the surface does. We look after the whole system, so you are not calling three different people to get the pool working.

Salt air and sand are hard on pumps, so we repair what can be saved and replace what cannot.

Wind blown sand clogs filters fast, and we bring them back to full flow.

We find out if water is going through the shell, the pipes or a worn fitting.

We replace tiles and coping that have come loose in the sun and wind.

Before a resurface we pump the water into a bladder on site and reuse it to refill.

Regular visits keep a pool clean and balanced while the owners or guests are away.
Get in touch if the pump is noisy or tripping the power, if sand keeps coming back into the pool through the returns, or if the surface feels gritty even after vacuuming.
We cover the Southern Peninsula, including Kommetjie, Noordhoek, Scarborough and Fish Hoek.
The biggest enemy of a new finish here is sand. While the pool is empty and curing, wind can blow sand straight onto the fresh surface. We cover and screen the pool where we need to and watch the forecast closely, choosing calmer days for the most delicate stages.
We also look hard at the pump house. On many coastal properties the pump sits in the open or in a small box that lets in sand and salt spray. A better cover, raised off the ground and with some airflow, can add years to the equipment.
If your Kommetjie home is a holiday let, tell us when the bookings are. We can fit the work into a quiet period and set up a maintenance schedule so the pool is clean for every arrival.
We inspect the surface, pump, filter, fittings and pump house, and check for water loss.
We give you a written quote covering the surface and any equipment that needs repair.
The pool is drained into a bladder, damaged plaster is removed and leaks and cracks are repaired.
The new finish goes on in suitable weather, the pool is refilled and the equipment is set up to cope with sand.

The wind carries fine sand off the beach and dunes and drops it into the water. Some always gets in, but a good skimmer, a working filter and regular vacuuming keep it under control.
We watch the wind forecast, cover the pool where needed and plan the finishing work for calmer days. A little sand can be cleaned off, but we avoid it settling into a fresh finish.
Salt air corrodes the motor, terminals and metal parts, and sand wears the seals. Keeping the pump covered, raised and rinsed makes a big difference to how long it lasts.
Yes. We can set up regular maintenance visits so the pool stays clean and balanced while you are away, and get it ready before guests arrive.
It is a good fit for Kommetjie because the hard, smooth surface is easy to clear of sand and resists algae. Marbelite also works well if the pool is cleaned regularly and the shell is sound.
