Bothasig has been a family suburb since the 1960s, and plenty of its pools have been in the ground for decades. We strip back tired marbelite, fix the cracks and leaks underneath, and give older pools a surface that will see the family through many more summers.
Bothasig was laid out in the mid 1960s on the old Bosmansdam farm, and it grew into a suburb of solid three-bedroom homes on decent-sized stands. On homes this age the pool was often put in by an earlier owner. The family living there now may have no idea how it was built or what has been done to it since.
Older concrete pools here tend to show the same things. The marbelite has worn thin on the steps and floor, there is a fine network of cracks, and the old waterline tiles are loose or missing. Some were painted over at one stage, which makes the next finish harder to bond. None of it means the pool must be filled in. It just needs to be done properly, in the right order.

An older Bothasig pool usually needs one of two surface treatments. We explain both on site, show you what we found in your pool and recommend the one that makes sense for the shell you have, not the one that costs the most.

If the shell is solid and the pool holds water, a fresh coat of marbelite brings it back. We sound the walls for hollow patches, cut out loose plaster and any old paint, repair the cracks and then apply new marbelite by hand. On a well-prepared shell, with sensible water care, the new surface can last for many years.
Pools that drop water every week, or that have been patched again and again, are better off with a fibreglass lining. It goes on over the prepared shell as one continuous layer, so old cracks and porous patches are sealed under it. The smooth surface also makes the weekly clean quicker, which helps when garden trees drop leaves into the water.

Most older pools need more than a new surface. We take care of the plumbing, tiles, equipment and water as part of the same job, so the pool works as well as it looks when we hand it back.

We replace the loose and faded tiles that are common on pools of this age.

We repair cracks in the walls, floor and steps before any new finish goes on.

A careful search for water loss through the shell, plumbing and fittings.

Older equipment often struggles in summer, so we test it and repair or replace whatever is worn.

Your pool water is held in a bladder on the property and pumped back once the work is done.

Regular servicing keeps a new marbelite or fibreglass surface in good shape.
Call us if you see the water dropping between top-ups, rough or flaking marbelite on the steps, loose tiles at the waterline, or green water that comes back soon after you clear it.
We cover the Northern Suburbs, including Bothasig, Edgemead, Monte Vista, Milnerton and Plattekloof.
Northern Suburbs summers are hot and dry, and the southeaster can blow hard for days on end. Fresh marbelite does not like either. Strong sun and wind dry the surface too fast, which can leave it crazed or patchy. We start early in the day, shade the work where we can and get water back into the pool as soon as the finish allows.
The best time to book is from late autumn to early spring. Most families want the pool ready for December, so a start in the cooler months means no rush, a better cure and a full pool well before the school holidays. We check side access and where the skip will stand at the site visit, so there are no hold-ups on the first day.
We come out, look at the shell, tiles and equipment, and check how much water the pool loses.
You get a written quote that explains what needs fixing and which finish we suggest.
The pool is drained into a bladder, then we remove loose material and repair the shell.
The new marbelite or fibreglass goes on, the pool is refilled and the water is balanced.

Yes, in most cases. Age on its own is not the problem, the condition of the shell is what matters. We check for structural cracks and hollow plaster, and if the shell is sound it can be resurfaced or relined.
Not directly. Paint stops new marbelite from bonding, so we remove it first and repair the plaster underneath. Fibreglass also needs a clean, prepared surface before it goes on.
Hot, windy weather does increase evaporation, so some loss is normal. If the level drops faster than a bucket of water standing on the step, there is likely a leak in the shell or plumbing and we can test for it.
Most jobs take one to two weeks on site, and then the finish needs time to cure before we refill. We give you a timeline with the quote so you can plan around it.
Yes. If your pump or filter is worn out, we can repair or replace it during the renovation. It makes sense to do it while the pool is empty and the plumbing is open.
Send us a few photos or give us a call, and we will book a free site visit to look at resurfacing, relining, leak detection or repairs for your Bothasig pool.
