Loevenstein homes are spread over the slopes of the Tygerberg Hills, and many pools are built into terraced gardens that look out towards the Boland mountains. We resurface, reline and repair these pools, and we sort out the cracks and water loss that a pool on sloping ground tends to pick up over time.
Loevenstein is an established, upmarket part of Bellville, set high against the Tygerberg Nature Reserve. Most homes are built to make the most of the view. That means split levels, retaining walls and pools set into a terrace or cut into the hillside. It is a great spot for a pool, and it is also a spot where the pool has to work a little harder.
A pool on a slope often sits partly on cut ground and partly on fill. Over the years the two can settle differently, which shows up as a crack along one wall, a gap behind the coping or a level that keeps dropping. Add the heat of a Bellville summer and an older marbelite finish wears out sooner than you would expect. We look at the structure and the plumbing first, and only then talk about the finish.

We offer both main renovation finishes in Loevenstein. The right one depends on how sound the shell is, whether there has been any movement, and how much time you want to spend on upkeep each week.

Marbelite is a good fit when the shell is stable and any cracks are small and no longer moving. We open up and repair each crack, take weak plaster back to a firm base and then apply new marbelite. On a pool that sits in the afternoon sun, a lighter colour keeps the water looking bright and clear.
Where a pool has moved a little over the years and keeps cracking, fibreglass is often the better option. The lining forms a single watertight skin over the old shell, which suits pools on a slope that have struggled to hold their water.

Hillside pools often need some repair work alongside the new finish. We do the structural, plumbing, tiling and equipment work ourselves, so nothing falls through the gap between different contractors.

We re-bed loose coping and replace cracked tiles where the pool edge has shifted.

Active cracks are opened, repaired and sealed before any resurfacing starts.

We trace water loss along pipes that often run some distance down to the pump room.

We service or replace equipment that works hard through long, hot inland summers.

Where the garden allows, the pool water goes into a bladder and is pumped back after the work.

A regular service keeps the water balanced and the new surface protected.
Look out for a crack that grows along one wall, coping that rocks underfoot, damp patches in the garden below the pool, or a water level that needs topping up every few days.
We work across the Northern Suburbs, including Loevenstein, Bellville, Welgemoed, Tyger Valley and Durbanville.
Access on a hillside property takes some thought. The pool may be one or two levels below the driveway, so we plan how rubble comes out, where the skip goes and how materials get down to the pool without damaging the garden. We sort this out at the site visit, not on the first morning.
Heat matters too. Bellville gets properly hot in summer, and a pool that sits in full sun all afternoon is hard on fresh marbelite. We prefer to resurface between April and October, when the finish can cure slowly and you still have the pool back before the warm weather arrives.
We inspect the shell, coping, plumbing and equipment, and look for signs of movement.

We drain the pool, fix cracks and leaks, and prepare the surface properly.
The new finish goes on, then we refill, balance the water and show you the basics of care.

Pools on sloping ground can settle unevenly over time, especially where part of the shell sits on fill. Small cracks can be repaired, but if they keep coming back we may suggest a fibreglass lining to seal the shell.
Yes. We check access at the site visit and plan the job around it. On steep properties materials are carried down by hand and rubble comes up the same way.
Both work well when they are installed properly and the water is kept balanced. Marbelite suits a stable shell, while fibreglass is the better choice for pools with recurring cracks or water loss.
We test both. A pressure test on the plumbing and a dye test around the fittings usually show where the water is going, so we only repair what is actually leaking.
Autumn and winter are ideal. The weather is cooler for curing, our diary is less full and your pool is ready well before summer.
