Tucked into the leafy foothills of the Constantiaberg, Tokai is one of Cape Town’s most established Southern Suburbs – stately homes on tree-lined avenues, big gardens, and plenty of swimming pools that have been part of family life for decades. Many of those pools were built in the 1970s, 80s and 90s, and after 30-odd summers of sun, chlorine and Cape winters, the surface starts to show its age. If your Tokai pool is rough underfoot, staining, chalking or losing water, you don’t need to rip it out. A proper reline or resurface brings it right back to life – and that’s exactly what we do at Aquatic Pools.
Why Tokai Pools Reach This Point
An older pool doesn’t fail overnight. Marbelite (the cement-based plaster coating on most concrete and gunite pools) is slightly porous, so over the years it wears thin, goes chalky, and gives algae and dirt somewhere to grip. In a suburb full of pines, oaks and established gardens, all that leaf litter and organic matter only speeds up staining. Common signs we see on Tokai jobs include:
- Rough, sandpaper-like walls and floor that scuff feet and swimming costumes
- Persistent black or grey algae stains that keep coming back no matter how much you brush and dose
- Chalky white residue on your hands after touching the surface
- Slow water loss that points to cracks or a failing surface – often needing leak detection before we go further
- Faded, patchy colour that no amount of cleaning will fix
Fibreglass Relining vs Fresh Marbelite
The two go-to options for renovating an older Tokai pool are fibreglass relining and re-marbelite. Both work – the right choice comes down to the condition of your shell, how much maintenance you want, and your budget.
Fibreglass Relining
With fibreglass relining, we bond fibreglass matting to the pool shell with resin, then finish it with a smooth, sealed coat. The result is a 100% non-porous surface that chemicals, acid and chlorine can’t penetrate. That’s the big advantage in an older Tokai pool: algae has nothing to cling to, cleaning gets easier, and a good fibreglass lining typically lasts 15 to 25+ years. It’s also excellent for sealing minor cracks and stopping ongoing leaks, so it’s often our recommendation for pools that have started losing water.
Marbelite Resurfacing
A fresh marbelite resurface strips back the tired old plaster and re-coats the shell with new marbelite in the colour you choose. It gives that classic, natural Cape pool look, usually carries a lower upfront cost than fibreglass, and lasts around 8 to 15 years when properly maintained. It does need a little more TLC – regular brushing and careful chemical balancing – because the surface is porous by nature. For many heritage-style Tokai homes, though, the traditional marbelite finish is exactly the look owners want.
What a Renovation Involves
Every job starts with an honest on-site assessment – there’s no point relining over a shell that has a structural problem. A typical Aquatic Pools renovation runs like this:
- Inspection & quote – we check the shell, waterproofing and, if needed, run leak detection
- Preparation – draining, stripping the old surface and repairing cracks or hollow spots
- Relining or resurfacing – fibreglass or fresh marbelite, applied properly and cured
- Finishing touches – new mosaics, waterline tiling, coping and fittings if you want a full refresh
- Refill & handover – we balance the water and hand back a pool that looks brand new
We also do repairs, mosaic work and full modernisations, so if your Tokai pool needs more than just a new surface, we can handle it all under one roof. We also look after pools in neighbouring Constantia and the wider Southern Suburbs.
Honest Pricing
Renovation costs depend on the size of your pool, its condition, and whether you go fibreglass or marbelite – so we won’t throw a random figure at you online. Prices start from a fair, competitive rate, and the only way to get an accurate number is a proper look at your pool. What we can promise is a clear, itemised quote with no surprises.
